Homemade Laundry Detergent

Mark and I thought we would try to save some money and go a lil more natural and make our own detergent. It is such an easy recipe and the cost is around $15.00 total for a big ole tub of dry detergent!

What ya need:
1 - 4lb. box of Arm & Hammer Baking Soda
1 - 4 lb. box of Arm & Hammer Washing Soda
1 - 4 lb. box of Borax
3 - bars of Laundry Soap (we used Fels Naptha brand...smells pepperminty)

I mixed all the dry powder in the container with a metal slotted spoon.  In the meantime, Mark grated the bars of soap with a cheese grater like they have at Olive Garden. He cut the bars in fourths, then grated. He has decided he will use the food processor next time! lol

I just kept adding the soap and stirring the detergent. This is how it looked:
And that's it! So I am gonna wash towels.....I used warm water and threw in one cup of the detergent.

****Edited*****03/15/2012*****I found that 1/2 cup works better!! (And saves the detergent, too)!
Now here I swished it around with my hand...the dry stuff kind of glunked up on the agitator, so I would suggest to make sure all that gets dissolved. The pieces of soap kind of just float around. Don't panic! they do dissolve and don't get on the clothes! It doesn't make a whole lot of bubbles like regular laundry detergent does, but I think that may be a good thing! lol
So I left the laundry room, came back and put the towels in the dryer. They smelled clean, but didn't have a 'fragrance'. I didn't use fabric softener (that's the next DIY project) and I DON'T use dryer sheets (I heard they clog up the filter), so I was satisfied with the smell of the towels. They came out of the dryer soft and clean! And no bad chemicals!
I think we have a keeper! Now we'll just see how long this lasts compared to the liquid detergent that I have used for years (Gain). If you make this, please comment and tell me how you like it! Thanks!

Blessings to you,
Denise
